"And it keeps everyone safe," he says, reaching out for Karen, his hand sliding over the back of her head, her hair soft and fine through his fingers. He leans in and presses a kiss to her forehead, knowing there are things he can't say even though he wants to, and trying to give feeling to those things with just that simple kiss.
It will never be enough. Everything in the world he can do for her and it will never be enough.
"These are the special books, after all," he continues. "The ones I only take out when I really need them."
